It gives independent filmmakers the opportunity to work on their feature length narrative scripts in a workshop environment structured to foster professional collaboration and high-caliber script development. The Latin American Film Festival (LAFF) will take place from April 18 to April 27 in the Dutch city of Utrecht. Since 2005, the festival’s mission is to promote Latin American culture through a selection of films that reflect its wealth and diversity. This year the program includes three films selected by FICM 2011: El premio by Paula Markovitch, El lugar más pequeño by Tatiana Huezo and El lenguaje de los machetes by Kyzza Terrazas.

The legendary Mexican actor Julio Alemán passed away on Wednesday, April 11. In honor of his memory, we have published a text by Roberto Fiesco, written for the FICM 2008 catalogue as part of the tribute organized by the festival for the actor. During the ceremony, Alemán expressed his happiness for being recognized in his hometown, Morelia, but he modestly argued that he did not deserve this honor. We beg to differ. We feel no tribute can really do him justice.

Canícula by Jose Álvarez
